This historic building was originally used to house a large number of convicts transported from Britain to Australia. It later served as accommodation for immigrants and also included a courthouse and government offices. The museum allows visitors to trace the lives of real individuals affected by this place through advanced interactive audio technology. It is also renowned for its beautiful historic architecture, designed by the emancipist architect Francis Greenway and built between 1817 and 1819 by convict labor. It was the first permanent shelter for convicts.
